In my current set of blog posts about how the world has changed, one of the points I make has to do with the pervasiveness of mobile devices and what you can do with them now. The technology advances in smartphones, mobile processing power, 4G, 5G, and manufacturing practices has brought the cost of these devices/services down to levels that ensures broad adoption. Considering that, and the number of applications that are available, you can see why usage patterns are what they are in the US and throughout the world.
The chart that accompanies this post is from OurWorldInData.org - a great service with some great information - I highly recommend them. Here is a link to the original article.
The data in the chart is old - only through 2018. But, the trend that this data shows is unmistakable. For the 11 years covered (2008-2018) the movement toward mobile computing is clear. While I don’t have the data from 2018 until now, we can safely assume that the trend has continued and possibly accelerated.
Why do I say that?
While I don’t have any statistics to back that claim up, you could ground the claim observationally - the evidence is all around us.
Just observe any of the following:
-
a teenager anywhere doing just about anything - on their phone
-
yourself when you don’t have something you need - Amazon has it - and you find it there - on your phone
-
any dinner table across America - sadly, many aren’t engaging with the others at the table - they’re on their phone
-
professionals traveling through any airport on business - on their phone
-
businesspeople sitting in boring meetings - on their phone
-
renting a room - on their phone
-
renting a car - on their phone
It won’t tax your imagination too much to see there are more user stories that are or can be supported by mobile technologies now than there were in 2018. All of this drives the adoption of mobile technologies. Why? Because people have their phones with them everywhere and they have low cost service plans with plenty of bandwidth - they want access to everything they care about on their mobile device.
What are you doing about it? Your customers, employees, and vendors are looking for you - or the product / service you offer - on their phones, when it is convenient for them.
If you want to delight your customers with the experience they are looking for, you need to meet them where they are - on their phones.
At 8 Penny Labs, we can help you think about your current situation and take decisive action toward creating the experience your customers want.
